Is it easier for an existing giant to decentralize… or for a new player to rise?
History shows that once a business has scale, re-architecting its entire system is almost impossible. Look at Google vs ChatGPT:
– Google’s Gemini models may be stronger.
– But ChatGPT already has hundreds of millions of users.
– At scale, momentum beats technology.
Crypto faces the same tension.
Take Hyperliquid → it works because 24 validators sit within 50m of each other. That’s efficient, but it’s not truly decentralized.
And when centralized giants try to pivot?
– Binance launched BNB Chain… but it never became the root of crypto.
– Coinbase launched Base… same story.
👉 The lesson: scale is sticky, and decentralizing after the fact is one of the hardest moves in history.
